f9-kde-4.0.84 live images
Whipped up some F9-based kde-4.0.84 live images for public consumption at
http://rdieter.fedorapeople.org/torrents/

Didn't have a chance to test these much (before running off to blow stuff up to celebrate a small regional holiday), so let me know how it works (or not).

Enjoy.

Rex's FUDCon redux
Kudos to those coming to my aid wrt my own accommodations, including Mike McGrath and J5.  Mike shared his excellent wit as well as sysadmin-fu (iscsi+raid!, csi) and fedora infrastructure goodies (asterisk). J5 and I had a nice chat at FUDpub about the state of gnome and kde, and taking advantage of future opportunities for collaboration... via shared technology and potential future joint (guadec, akademy, whatever) sites.

One of my favorite aspects about FUDCon is getting valuable facetime with folks I hadn't met before.  Highlights include meeting Smooge, unselfishly sharing a wealth of fantastic stories and hammering on epel-related business; Andrew Overholt, busy working some java-fu magic to get Alfresco into fedora; and Clint Savage, utilizing his own brand of media-fu magic by experimenting with streaming audio and video of FUDcon talks.

I also helped lead a couple of barcamp sessions, "How to be a package maintainer" and "the care and feeding of SIGs", and was very happy with the results of both.  The former, went through http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/Join describing each step and answering questions along the way.  If all goes well, we'll have at least 4-5 new maintainers, including some guy named Max.

The care and feeding of SIGs brushed on many of the same topics that I wish to also bring to akademy 2008.  I've got a bit more work to get that where I want it to be, but it was a good start on brainstorming and feedback.

Unfortunately, didn't have much chance to evangelize kde as I would have liked, but that's ok.  As a positive aside, through heroic measures by other KDE SIG'ers, we saw kde 4.1 beta 2 (4.0.83) land in rawhide.  Rock on.

United joy
I've held a long grudge against United, but I won't go into that here and now.  What I *will* go into is my renewed frustration based on the fact that my flight home, in the air and half-way there, turned around and went back to Chicago.  W-T-F.  OK, I'm sure that the minor mechanical malfunction they encountered was probably a very good reason for doing so, but it frustrates me to no end that now I (and J5) woke up this morning ~4AM for nothing!   My well-laid plans to get home early were foiled.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, United.  Happy, Happy, joy, joy.  I love you too.

fedora 9 + kde 4.0 = fail? srsly?
I've seen several comments recently about some folks' disappointment in Fedora 9 and KDE 4.0.   I thought I'd share a few thoughts, now that I've slept on it and most of my angst is gone, so I can hopefully spew some thoughts and stay close to rational commentary.

First off, there seem to be several classes of disappointed people.   For the purposes of this blog (and some long-time friends of mine who'll get the joke), I shall refer to those disappointed by several other names including: spinach-speaking lynch mobs, grumpies, and unhappies.

1.  spinach-speaking lynch mobs (sslm's), aka, kde-4.0 = collosal fail, wtf were you thinking?  And when they refer to "you", they mean both kde and fedora.  kde, in that kde-4.0 should never have been released as anything but alpha or beta.  fedora, in that why did we choose to include anything so bad?  you all suck, suck, suck.

Well, we can all have a difference of opinion, and it's ok to agree to disagree sometimes.

2.  grumpies, aka, Lovers of all things kde3.  There seem to be some that are disappointed in kde4, mostly because it simply isn't kde3, ie, apparently anything other than an exact copy of kde3, feature for feature, config option for config option, is a disapointment.

Maybe your expectations were a little off.  Maybe the marketing behind kde4 didn't get to you.  Don't know what to tell ya, other than, if you truly love kde3 that much, that's fine.  Stick with what you want and love.  In fedora-land, that means sticking with Fedora 8.  But, but "I want Fedora 9" you may say.  well, can't have your cake and eat it too... can't please all people all of the time... and all that.

3.  unhappies, aka not satisfied with the current state of things, but willing to put up with some short-term inconvenience for the long-term greater good.

Much of myself lives in this camp.  Including kde 4.0, meant that we (fedora) can continue to get incrementally better kde4-wise (*cough* kde-4.1 *cough*) without waiting another 6-month release-cycle for f10.  From a practical point of view, since kde3 (on f8) gets EOL'd earlier, it allows us to focus even more on making kde4 better, earlier.

Let me re-iterate that including kde 4.0 in fedora shouldn't have caught anyone by surprise.  The Fedora KDE SIG develops, meets, makes decisions all transparently in the open, and strives to always invite more input, contribution, criticism, participation by our community.  Now, if our efforts weren't publicized enough to land on your attention radar, I guess that's at least partially our fault.  My apologies.

Any other good stuff folks should know about wrt all this, let us know, and we'll be happy to add to
